The Phladelphia & Western Railway was intended in the early 1930s as a high-speed competitor to the parallel Pennsylvania Railroad's service to Harrisburg. Operating out of 69th St. Terminal in Philadelphia (back when it was called Union Square Terminal) the line featured third rail power and sleek 100mph steel cars called Bullets, built by J.G. Brill. Over the years, the line also saw operation of Lehigh Valley RR through-service from Philadelphia to Allentown, 'Strafford' cars (built for the small extension to Strafford, PA, now long abandoned), re-trucked Market-Frankford EL cars and Chicago 6000-series EL cars (both of these to cover services while new cars were being built) and even the two ex-North Shore Electroliner trainsets (renamed Libertyliners). Even though the line stopped short of Harrisburg by about 75 miles, it became a part of the suburban Philadelphia transit system to Norristown. It continues to be operated by SEPTA today as their Route 100, and is the last remaining interurban line in the United States. After a series of fatal accidents in the 1980s involving the line's original aging equipment, SEPTA decided to upgrade and re-equip the P&W (as it is still known to the traction enthusiasts in the area) with new trackwork, rebuilt stations and signaling, and modern 'N5' stainless steel cars built by ABB Traction. The N5 cars are perhaps not as aesthetically pleasing as the Bullets, but they are larger (63'10" length over anticlimbers), comfortable, smooth riding and have the latest safety features.
