CHICAGO SOUTH SHORE & SOUTH BEND RR
Modern Interurban MU Cars

These cars are 85' stainless steel cars built by Nippon Sharyo (Sumitomo) in the early 1980s for the South Shore line. The former interurban line was upgraded to mainline commuter status at the same time, and incorporated into Chicago's commuter rail network. Although operated by Chicago METRA, the line is owned and maintained by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD). The line does retain its identity as the 'South Shore' line. The cars feature two pantographs, center doors, and a top speed of 75mph. They were delivered in power, and later trailer, configurations. The earliest cars (1982 vintage) are distinguished easily by their letterboards on the sides, which cars from later orders (1986 and 1992) do not have.
